This summer, the Worcester Business Improvement District (BID) has teamed up with Lightbox to introduce an exciting new initiative called “The Base.” This program is designed to provide a dedicated space for local teenagers aged 11-17, managed by local volunteers.
Starting Thursday, July 25th, The Base will be open weekly, every Thursday, during the summer holidays from 1 pm to 5 pm at The Granary, Worcester. The initiative aims to offer a safe and supportive environment where young people can relax, have fun, and connect with their peers.
The Base will feature a variety of activities to keep attendees entertained. Each week The Base will offer different activities, such as cage football, Xbox Series S gaming tournaments, nail art sessions, and graffiti workshops, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Additionally, table tennis, a pool table, a chill-out zone, and free Wi-Fi will be available each week.
Stephanie Boyd, a volunteer at Lightbox, emphasised the initiative’s goal: “As churches across Worcester, we want to create space and opportunity for young people to connect and know there is a place for them and people here for them. We do this through LIGHTBOX pop-ups in schools, colleges, after-school drop-ins, and collaborative youth events.”
Sam McCarthy, CEO of Worcester BID, shared her enthusiasm for the project: “We are thrilled to partner with Lightbox to create a hub for young people at the heart of our city over the summer. This initiative will provide great opportunities for positive youth engagement and give teens a dedicated, free space during peak footfall times.”
In addition to The Base, BID is also providing activities for younger children at Crowngate Pod, offering arts and crafts sessions from Monday through Wednesday.
If The Base proves successful, the partnership aims to offer more holiday events like this in the future.
No booking is required to attend any sessions at The Base—just pop in with a friend or come and make new ones!
