Love Local Business: Spend £10 to put £5m into Worcester economy

"IF every person in Worcester spent £10 at an independent business, it would inject over £5million into the local economy" – that's the message as we urge our readers to back the city this Christmas.

We are calling on our readers to show your support for our unique independents by shopping local.

Last week we launched our Love Local Business campaign to encourage people to spend their money locally in the run up to Christmas, to help businesses as they struggle with the impact of coronavirus.

As part of our Love Local Business campaign we caught up with the team at Visit Worcester for tips on the best places to dine, relax and explore in the city. Here's what they had to say.

For those enjoying a staycation weekend away in Worcester or simply an easily accessible day trip, a quiet stroll along the banks of the River Severn or a peaceful wander around Worcester Cathedral, some heritage in The Royal Porcelain Works and Museum of Royal Worcester are a must. But Worcester city is not only the home to so much history (and of course the world-famous sauce), it’s now a hotspot for independent bars and restaurants.

Love Local Business: Back Worcester traders this Christmas

Sam McCarthy, projects and marketing manager for the BID, said: "We see real value to this campaign as it is critical that we support our local economy by keeping the spend local this Christmas.

"Worcester is made up of over 60 per cent independent businesses who are the heart and soul of our city. Worcester retailers have made it their priority to adapt and embrace the changes to make visitor safety and the ability to shop independent accessible from the comfort of your homes as well as enjoying a safe trip to the city.

"All we ask is that you support our local businesses and respect their changes when you visit them – please wear your face mask and help us to keep Worcester safe."

Schools and community groups invited to join elephant parade

SCHOOLS and community groups are being invited to be part of Worcester’s second major public art trail in summer 2021, which will see colourful elephants parade through the city’s streets and open spaces.

Worcester’s Big Parade will bring around 60 decorated elephant sculptures to the city for eight weeks next summer, including approximately 30 calves which will have been created by local children, teachers and community group members.

Did you spot the first elephant sculpture in Worcester?

THE FIRST decorated elephant sculpture, named Sundar, had a whistle-stop tour around Worcester yesterday.

Sundar, visited some of the best known spots in the city including Friar Street, Cathedral Square, Foregate Street and even popped in to see the mayor at the Guildhall.

The tour is a pre courser to what is to come next year. Elephant sculptures will line the streets and open spaces for eight weeks in 2021, creating Worcester’s Big Parade – a Wild in Art event brought to the city by St Richard’s.

Hopmarket artists holding outdoor exhibition to spread cheer in Worcester

A COURTYARD shopping centre in Worcester has welcomed a number of artists as part of a city-wide art project.

The Hopmarket is one of the chosen venues for an outdoor gallery of art, organised by Worcester City Council, Worcester BID and Severn Arts.

The initiative – which was launched earlier this month with a theme of Hope and Joy – aims to create engaging and bespoke designs in retail units throughout the city.

Love Local Business: Enjoy Halloween half term fun in Worcester

This half term Worcester has got you covered for fun activities, from Where’s Wally to spooks, scares and ghost stories.

One of Worcester’s oldest buildings is the place to go for Halloween activities. The Commandery, Worcester has over 800 years of history, making it one of the best places to go for spooky activities this October. From Tuesday 27 October through to Friday 30 there will be safe spooktacular events for all the family to enjoy during the half term break.

Children of all ages can enjoy the Ghoulish Ghost Trail and Creepy Craft Bags.
